PURPOSE
The nine-frame camera is a high-speed detector capable
of resolving fast events within the visible and near IR spectral range. It is
used to investigate the temporal variation of a single-shot or low-repetition-rate
two-dimensional optical signals in the nine-frame mode.
It can be applied in the next fields of science and
technology:
- ballistic investigation
- investigations of combustion processes, detonation, explosion, scattering
of ground and fields of fragments and so on
- shock waves physics
- laser physics
- nuclear physics
- plasma physics including thermonuclear synthesis
- electrical breakdowns and discharges including lightning, etc.
CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATING PRINCIPLE
The main components of the nine-frame camera are:
- an input optic system
- PIM-112 electron tube containing two pairs of deflection plates and a
micro-channel plate
- a power supply unit
- a control unit with step voltage and gate pulses generators unit
- a CCD readout device unit
These components are assembled within the metal mini
case and can be updated. The camera is coupled to a computer by an electricalor
fiber-optic cable. Frame and pause durations are set up by a computer.
The input optic system transfers a two-dimensional image of
the phenomenon to be analyzed onto the photocathode of the tube. A photoelectron
image is compressed and focused onto the locked micro-channel plate. Two pairs
of deflection plates are scanning the photoelectron image over the micro-channel
plate to the perpendicular axes, placing frames. At some moments the gate pulses
unlock the micro-channel plate. The photoelectron images one by one are intensified
and then transferred to the screen. The visible image of nine-frames is read-out
from screen by CCD TV camera (1392x1032 pixels, 12 bits ADC).
